Derivart were born in 2004 in Barcelona, with the interest in exploring the intersection between art, technology and finance. The group consists of a visual artist, a video game software engineer and a sociologist of finance.
Bubble. Blowout. Crisis. In the past few months, economic pessimism has taken over Spain –both in homes and in the media. After the fact, all kinds of experts have offered judicious diagnostics of the bubble. But the citizens rightly ask themselves where were these technical experts when the problem was in gestation? And, in any case, what is a bubble? How do you recognize it? And what should you do when it appears?
With the show Playing in times of crisis the artistic trio Derivart contributes to the financial debate with a different perspective. The collective began to investigate the bubble in 2006, two years before it actually burst. Using interviews, fieldwork, and data bases, the trio’s investigation sheds light on a unique episode of Spanish economy, in real time. Playing in Times of Crisis presents this investigation in its artistic format. Five installations of video art, photography and electronic art that reconfigure the relationship between people and macroeconomics: against speculation, databases; instead of impotence, shoot the bubble; before buying a house, picture all the wrinkles you will have when you’re done paying the mortgage. Beat pessimism with a trip through Spain’s real estate market. Meet the victims and ideologists of the bubble.
