Biography

Jun Azumatei was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1973. In 1999, he graduated from Tama Art University.

One of the most persistent themes in his work is the concept of memory, which is displayed abstractly in most of his paintings. Azumatei uses different techniques, while having a unique method of his own as the most prominent one, where he creates by rendering a photograph of the sky on an ink-jet printer and later applying acrylic paint and aqueous varnish.

Jun Azumatei’s latest exhibitions are The National Art Center in Tokyo, Nishinomiya Funasaka Biennale in Hyogo, AB projects in Zurich, APS in Tokyo, Atelierhaus Arlesheim and  Galerie Katharina Krohn in Basel.

In 2009 the artist was granted by Pola Art Foundation and in 2010 he was granted by the Japanese government. Azumatei was also awarded three times by Nomura foundation.
